La Flor Dominicana

are made by Tabacalera La Flor S.A. This company was founded in Santiago, Dominican Republic in 1996. Litto Gomez, the owner and founder of the company, has been called by Cigar Aficianado “the most innovative mind in the cigar business.”

The compliment has been well-earned. Gomez has an amazing ability to transform misfortune into great fortune. He was once a jeweler and owned a store in Miami. This store was robbed at gunpoint, and Gomez lost close to one-half million dollars in jewels. He refused to let this break him, and subsequently moved to the Dominican Republic, where he bought a 120 acre farm and founded his company. There, he began to manufacture cigars under the brand name Los Libertadores. Gomez says it took him between 15 to 20 years to perfect the blends and make them what they are today.

Originally, Tabacalera La Flor S.A. grew only binder and filler. However, in 2002, Gomez bought a second 40 acre farm to use for growing Corojo and Sumatra sun shade tobacco for wrappers. The company is now expected to produce 4 million cigars in the near future.

Process and Quality Control are meticulous and detailed. Gomez insists on premium quality in every step of the production process. Even while in the fields, the plants are cleaned of the suckers that grow between the leaves and the stems. This cleaning process is done four times for each and every one million plants on the farm prior to being harvested.

Later, when the tobacco plants flower, the workers strip off the flowers in order to ensure that the leaves fully develop. Another quality assurance step that is taken by Tabacalera La Flor S.A. takes is to put more space between plants. This helps each plant get more wind and sun on its leaves. This gives the leaves a greater amount of muscle, and it makes each leaf thicker.

Obviously, such quality measures do in some respects limit production of tobacco quantities. But then again, this is all about quality, not quantity. This limitation has actually become a great strength for La Flor Dominicana. By combining tobaccos from other regions in the world with his own, Gomez has produced some of the most satisfying blends in the world.
